Haircare

Updated: Jan 25, 2020

Finding cleaner, less/non-toxic haircare products was the hardest because a lot of "natural" products seem to strip the hair and there is always some ingredient that is questionable. Also, apparently your hair goes through a detox while it's getting used to the chemical-free products that actually build up on your hair. My hair felt like straw when I first used the True Botanicals shampoo but over time and with good conditioning it got better and now feels so healthy. I still use True Botanicals shampoo occasionally because it (and the conditioner) smell divine and it's a nice clarifying shampoo. Evolvh was one that made my hair feel great and they have styling products also. However, they use citrus (grapefruit) seed oil as a preservative which is known to contain carcinogenic contaminants due to the extraction process. I'm not sure how much our body can handle so I avoid it. They just came out with a new SmartColor line for color treated hair and there is no grapefruit or citrus seed oil in it so I may try it again.

Another good haircare line is Innersense Organic Beauty. They have products for different types of hair and I've found that the color-treated line works well. This line uses the preservatives Sodium Benzoate and Potassium Sorbate - they are natural and considered lower risk preservatives and I figure that they are washing out anyway. And their products make my hair feel so nice and healthy without fading my color so I decided to go ahead and use them. There is still debate about the safety of these preservatives in high concentrations but from what I've researched if they are used in small concentrations it is ok. Innersense states that they are always on the lookout for even safer preservatives which is why I like this brand.

Rahua Color Full Shampoo and Conditioner are my favorites. They have recently changed the formula of both so they don't have the pretty fragrance that they used to but I still really like them. There are no questionable ingredients in either the shampoo or the conditioner and Rahua oil is great for hair. They have shampoos and conditioners for different types of hair as well as styling products. Check out their website: www.rahua.com
